Meet our third Queensland College of Teachers TEA

Meet our third Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX Award finalist, Stacey Power,

Stacey’s fierce and purposeful advocacy for Queensland’s most vulnerable young people — young people who often haven’t had an adult in their corner — is her super power.

Her work revolves around answering a simple question: “What does this child need at this very moment to set them up well for the future?” The answer and the solutions are often complex. But for Stacey, they are always achievable with determined and creative thinking.

Stacey draws on 20 years of pedagogical practice, life experience and expertise in special and inclusive education to look deeply at each child, their living situation, their family, and any medical diagnoses they may have, such as autism or anxiety, and connects the student and their family with the services they need to help clear their path, so they can engage in education.

Her role with Arethusa started during the COVID pandemic. She was given a mission in late 2020 to find 15 students and get them back into education or training. That was the start of Arethusa’s ground-breaking Anywhere Learning Team which Stacey leads. The team now comprises about 50 educators, welfare and allied health workers and other support staff who bring learning to students, wherever they are, wherever they feel safe, such as at home or in a park.

Ever year Stacey and her team work with about 250 young people, creating highly individualised programs that address the underlying issues preventing them from accessing education.

Over the past three years, the team has successfully re-engaged almost 90 per cent of the 700 young people who weren’t in school — encouraging them back into education (at Arethusa or another school or school of distance education), training or employment.

Going hand in hand with this work is Stacey’s leadership of Arethusa’s targeted literacy and numeracy support program, which includes an intensive reading intervention program.

Today we introduce our second Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX Award finalist, Kerry McFarlane.

Education has been Kerry’s vocation for 44 years. She has been a maths teacher, science teacher, home economics teacher, principal, Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) panel member (across multiple subjects and regions), Queensland Core Skills & NAPLAN marker, timetable creator and education strategist.

Kerry’s professional and personal heart for young people is limitless. Alongside her work in schools, for the past 12 years Kerry and her husband have been foster carers — opening their lives and hearts to children in the greatest need. Her generosity, kindness and compassion know no bounds.

At school, there’s nothing Kerry wouldn’t do to support Arethusa’s young people — no hurdle that cannot be overcome, or problem that cannot be solved. Her creative problem-solving skills and tenacity are among her many, many strengths.

Kerry’s journey with Arethusa speaks to her mission to always put the needs of young people first. Despite her extensive teaching and leadership experience, Kerry was initially unsure whether she would be the right fit for Arethusa. So she started as a relief worker in the front office at our Spring Hill campus in 2019. This gave her the chance to get to know our young people, to build relationships with them and our amazing staff, before moving into what ultimately was her natural role, as the campus Principal where she stayed for five years.

Kerry now occupies a cross-campus position, Head of Accreditation, Engagement and Outcomes. In this role she manages several department teams, while also leading strategic school improvement and student outcomes.
